How can I make a project level field visible at the task level?

There is a unique number (Project number)  which we have at the project level for each project. How can I make this field visible at the task level. The reason being, the time and expense users will need to see this number when they enter their time sheet against the project. I already tried displaying the project number on the time sheet entry page but the entire column is coming up as blanks.
