There are many fields available in clarizen and in the manual it states that what type of field it is, its API name, and any options is it is a pick list item. But the Manual does not describe the value or state whether or not it is manually updated or automatic. These types of things are very useful. Its great to know if we can edit it or not (which is provided) but if there is no understanding around its intended use, the field gets over looked and wasted.

That is a great suggestion - I'll log this a documentation update request and get back to you with the CR number.
The external ID field in Clarizen is normally populated by an external system such as Salesforce or another integration system. You'll notice that if you search this field in any Project, it is a locked field.
