Hi Barbara,
Once you create a custom field, you cannot edit the type. You would need to create a new custom field if you want to switch from Text to Text Box.

How can I change the type of a custom field?
I wanted to change the custom field "Status_Overview" from Text to a Text box field so that it would be easier for users to update, but it looks like I can’t since it is grayed out even in Edit mode. Is there any way to override that without making a new field, copying and pasting everyone’s Status_Overview entries into the new field, and then deleting the old field? I wanted to avoid that if at all possible. Thanks.

This field is littered all around our entire Clarizen space. Is there a way that I can lock out all users during my maintenance period when I am making the new field, copying and pasting the old field into the new, and deleting the old field?

Hi Barbara,
You cannot lock out the users when making a new field. It should not have any impact when you are making a new field. What I recommend is make a new field with the same name but different type. Then use Excel Add-in to pull all the information already entered into the old field and update the new field with the old field with the Data Loader App. After that, just delete the old field.
