As long as you don't expect the DOM to remain compatible between releases, you can go ahead and create such an extension.
Whats the deal - Custom Chrome Extensions?
Do you have any policies if someone wants to create an Chrome Extension to enchance the DOM itself for the Configure page? II will only be concentrating on Content Scripts for manipulation of the look of the Configure Page.
