updating from report time you mention will change the actual effort of the particular workitem ? i.e., whether it can be used instead of timesheet.
Report time from the Work Plan instead of using "add related"
Did you know that you can minimize clicks by reporting time from the work plan? From the work plan, select a work-item that is reportable and you'll notice that the 'Report Time' button appears in the ribbon in the Common tab.

For some reason the "Report Time" button is greyed out both on the common tab and in the task level pick list. How would I as an admin correct that?
