Mandatory Field

Hello... we are in the process of evaluating Clarizen and setting up project forms, etc.  We want some of our fields to be "mandatory" or required fields.  When I create a custom field, I don't see an option to make the field mandatory.  I've looked around the forums, user manual, and tutorials, but can't seem to find out how to do this.  I've seen custom actions, validation rules, etc., but we don't quite understand all that yet... is this something that is so simple that I'm overlooking it?  Help!

Hello Jeff, and welcome to the Clarizen forums.

A custom field in itself is not mandatory or not.

However, if you choose to create a project from a form, you may create a custom action (at the organization level) to this effect.

In the custom action you may select to add user input, which will create the form itself. In the user input, you can decide what will be mandatory to the creation of the project and what will not. You would then tell the custom action to update your custom field in accordance to what was inputted by the user.

Don't forget to add your custom field to the view/grid and/or project property card.

I invite you to read up on custom actions in our user manual, and hop onto one of our Q&A webinars where we can show you the basics of custom actions.

Best of luck in your use of Clarizen.

Regards,

Jonathan,

Thanks for the fast response.  Am I starting in the wrong place with this form?  I attended a Q&A on Wednesday where Rob recommended that the best way for us to add new projects (based on our workflow and structure) was to build a form that we'd use by choose NEW, then PROJECT.  From there, all the fields we want would be there, and it would be a fast and easy way to get rolling on a new project.  But are you saying that a custom action could be a "new project request form"?

Rob is absolutely correct, and V6 makes it very easy easy to change the fields that appear on those "Add New" forms. However, there is no way (yet) to select which fields are mandatory using that method. You can create a validation rule, but I think a custom action will be the best way to go for now if you have mandatory fields.

Thanks Josh.  OK...so custom actions and all of that code is a little confusing, and the tutorials and user guide just don't explain what all the terms mean or how to explain how to think through and design a custom action.  Where do I go to learn this and have it explained so I can build our custom actions, etc.?

I would hop on another Q&A, but make sure it is an "Advanced Q&A Forum." You register for these at the same place: http://webinars.clarizen.com. Just say you would like to see how to set up a custom action form and how to set mandatory fields. It is easy after the first time you do it! The key is to remember that there are two parts, the form and mapping the form data to actual fields.
