User type locked

I'm on a trial account presently, trying to change user types but it remains locked.  I'm the administrator, so that shouldn't be the issue. I want to add customers to my job discussions but don't want them to have full access, which is what they have right now.

You would have to revoke their license and then the user type will be set based on whichever new license you assign them. For customers the important thing to remember is to set them up as "external users." This will make it so that they can only access what you explicitly assign them to.
