This is by design as this is a roll up field. If you want to show 20h of work for 6 months, simply add a task under the project and specify the work and duration desired.

How to input Work field at Project/Milestone level?
The project we are creating is simply a bucket of hours that the client has purchased. There is no need for Milestones or Tasks. All I need is to input 20 hours of Work for a duration of 6 months.
However, I am not able to edit these fields because they are locked. It forces me to add this at the task level. Is there no way to simply input total "work" at the project level (or the milestone level) anymore? I know I was able to do this before.
