This is a big question that cannot be easily answered without better understanding what your needs are. What is the Use Case here? What are you trying to accomplish?
Ultimately, Resource Allocation Best Practices are centered around Work Policy (Fixed Work, Fixed Duration or Fixed Unit (Resource)). Based on the resources you allocate to the Tasks and the specified Work on those tasks, the Resources Load will be calculated automatically which can be viewed in the Resource Load.
The Resource Load provides two different sets of data...
- Planned Work and Load
- Remaining Effort and Load
The Resource Load clearly shows you People or Groups and their load for both Planned Work and Remaining Work. This allows you to see how much Work the Resources were Planned for OR how much Work they have already accomplished (and have remaining).
