Having run a report to produce a listing, the user can then apply custom filters and sorting to the individual columns. It would be really convenient to be able to name and save those settings as a 'personal' version of the report, so it can be easily run again later without having to redo each setting manually.

Agree, but just about any report you can do with a view instead. Not only can you save the sorts and filters, but the data is editable (and even shareable now). I would try to reproduce your report in a module view.
