Email a Task to create a Discussion that doesn't yet exist

I'm using a Custom Panel to provide a link out to our own internal web tools on particular types of Tasks. The user will fill out a form that needs to be provided to our Graphic Designer. We want to insert the details into a Discussion post on the Task, but in this case, the Discussion won't exist yet. I was going to use the API to create a new discussion and post the details, but we thought it might be easier. Can we just email the Task and make it create a Discussion on itself?
