Extracting Time Tracking data

Hello, I was hoping to bounce a few ideas around in an attempt to load time tracking data into our BI solution Qlikview. Our Qlikview server is on-premises so I believe the only way is to load a flat file into the cube. So I am considering a few options and wonder if you have any feedback or experience.

1) Set up a scheduled workflow to email a report of time tracking to a mailbox, then use a Unix script to extract the attachment and copy it to a directory so the cube may load it.

2) Have the workflow email a DropBox account and use a Unix script to download the attachment.

3) Have the workflow email an Outlook account and set up a rule to copy the file to Qlikview.

4) Connect Qlikview to Clarizen API via web-services (I have the least experience in this one).

Or is there an easier way?

Thank-you,

Jonny

Jonathan,

Thank you for reaching out to Clarizen for these questions. From Clarizen side, you do have multiple options to pull the Time Tracking data, such as:

  • Time Tracking Reports via the Reports Module (which can be sent to an email via Scheduled Workflow Rule

  • Time Tracking Reports via our Excel Add-In, which provides you more flexibility in the data you can pull and the format (in excel).

  • Using the Clarizen API

As for the Qlikview side, it all depends on how the data can be received, whether manual or automated. From the sounds of your suggestions/options. It accepts data via scripts that can be run but I do not have enough knowledge of the product to speak intelligently on it.

I believe you have two options to move forward...

1 - Speak with you Account Manager or Customer Success Manager on a Best Practice based on needs.

2 - Work with our Professional Services team to configure something via the API (if possible).

As an added item, I will repost this question in our Developer section where API questions are commonly handled.

Sincerely,

Boris

Hi Boris, thanks for the information. I've had a think and my plan is to set up a SWR to email me the data, weekly is sufficient, and then manually place the file to get picked up by Qlikview. This will do for now until we are able to go the API route.

I have a question regarding the time tracking reports, I noticed that I cannot edit these reports specifically the Resource Hourly Report. I can edit all other reports are far as I can see, is there any reason why I cannot edit this one? I need to add in a custom field that we use for a project ID that links to other data in Qlikview.

I see that it has been mentioned already here: https://success.clarizen.com/entries/24092753-v5-Reports-non-editable

Has this functionality been added?

Thanks for your help!

Jonny

Jonathan,

Unfortunately, those were originally created Out Of the Box and are part of the code. They cannot be modified most likely because the Product Team did not want the Timesheet reports altered. But next month it will not matter anymore. We have a redesigned version of the Report Module coming out which will have greater functionality including more flexibility in the types of reports you run.

You also have the option of using the Excel Add-In which is a powerful query enabling you to pull any data from Clarizen.

Sincerely,

Boris
