Setting Work Items to Reportable and updating Effort from Timesheets

A work item can either be Reportable or have its sub-items be Reportable. You'll notice once you check the Reportable box,

the "Allow Reporting On Sub Items" box will be disabled in the Property Card. That said, if you want child items to be

reported on, you can select the "Allow Reporting On Sub Items" option at a parent level. This will automatically make leaf

child items reportable*.  *

(Note, also, that the progress of child items rolls up to parent items by default).

Secondly, if you check the "Actual Effort Updated from Timesheets" box, this indicates that your users will not be able to

enter actual effort in the work plan and will only be able to enter it in the timesheet. Furthermore, the actual effort and

remaining effort on the task will be updated with the information logged in the timesheet.

Does this mean if I make my project reportable, then resources can only enter time against the project and not any of its sub items (tasks, sub-tasks, milestones)?

Correct, because Allow Reporting on sub items will be disabled on sub-items if Project is set as Reportable. This is in place to avoid having duplication on Timesheets.

Hi Boris,

It appears that Program are default to Reportable = True when created.  Why does this occur on the Program Work Item and Not the Project?  I had expected both Work Items to work the same when it comes to the Reportable flag and Actual Effort Updated from Timesheets flag. What is the reasoning for the 2 items acting differently when it comes to timesheet reporting on the work item?
