Work Policy Behavior

Work Policy Behavior

The Duration, Work of the task and resource’s Work and Units are interlinked. Changing one of these properties can cause modification of others.

Rules of these changes are regulated by the specific Work Policy:

  • Fixed Duration
  • Fixed Work
  • Fixed Unit

Project default Work Policy is defined in the Default Work Policy control of the project Properties card. This Work Policy is inherited by all newly created tasks. User can change Work Policy of the specific task using Work Policy control of the task Properties card.

Note:

Organization default Work Policy is defined in the Work Item Policy option in the System Settings / Work Plan Settings and can be changed to match your organization preference.

Following table summarizes behavior of Duration, Work and Units changes for different work policies:

 Fixed Duration

Changing Work causes changes of the Units and vice versa to match DurationDuration does not change automatically. Manual change of Duration causes recalculation and, if required, Work modification to fit new Duration.

If you assign a new resource to the Fixed Duration task that already has assigned resources, application redistributes total Work so that each resource will be assigned less Work. Distribution will be performed proportionally to the initial*Units *of assigned resources.

Fixed Work

Changing Duration causes changes of the Units and vice versa to match Work. The Work does not change automatically. Manual change of the Work causes recalculation and, if required, Duration modification to fit new Work.

If you assign a new resource to the Fixed Work task that already has assigned resources, application redistributes resources’ Work and Units, so that total task Work will stay the same. Task Duration will change accordingly to match the resource that requires maximum Duration for his Work.

FIXED UNIT

Changing Work causes changes of the Duration and vice versa to match the UnitsUnits do not change automatically. Manual change of the Units causes recalculation and, if required, Duration modification to fit the Units.

If you assign a new resource to the* Fixed Unit task that already has assigned resources, application redistributes resources Work, so that total task Work and resource Units will stay the same. Task Duration will change accordingly to match the resource that requires maximum Duration for his Work*.
