Assigning Resources to Tasks vs. Milestones

Can someone provide (or point me towards) guidance on assigning resources to milestones vs. the tasks under a milestone? If I assign resources to each task, then would I also need to assign them to the parent milestone? Would the resources assigned to the milestone simply be a combination of all resources assigned to the children tasks? Thanks!
