How to better organize our Notifications?

Users are complaining they are bombarded with notifications and not able to use them efficiently.
I am looking for a solution to get notified differently on Posts where I was explicitly mentioned.
Also, ability to organize the posts -either group by related item, group by sender.
I am open to any know best practices that will make working with social efficient.
