When I use the Action inside the Project Workflow Rule to create a New Request Item, is this new request now LINKED (belongs / goes) to the Project?
Or do I have to do anything else?

Hello Michael,
The request will not be linked to the project by default. What you'll have to do is to create a RelatedWork link like so:
The request object should go into the $Case field and the project object should go into the $WorkItem field.

It is difficult to say exactly without seeing the workflow rule, but if the rule is built on the Project entity, $WorkItem field should contain CurrentObject() and $Case field should contain the request object, which will be something like NewObject1 or NewObject2 or NewObject3, etc. Please refer to the screenshot for clarification:
