What is the relationship between remaining effort and resource load

Is there any direct relationship between remaining effort and resource load? Initially resource load is based upon estimated effort. When the work changes, we dont want to change the original estimate, but we do update the remaining effort. (I thought this woud take 10 hours, it will actually take 15 hours.) But the resource load remains linked to the original estimate.

What is the intended process for managing the original estimate, an updated estimate to complete and the resource load?

Thanks.

You can view resource load by remaining effort instead of planned work, the option is in the upper left-hand corner.

Consider this scenario. I have a task T1 from dates 1 to 2, with resource R1 assigned 100%. So work is 16h. My resource load with planned work shows 8 and 8 on dates 1 and 2.

Now I fill an 8 hour time entry for 1st and get it approved. So my actual work on that task is changed to 8 h and remaining effort reduces to 8h. So far so good.

Now I manually update the remaining effort from 8h to 24h. So effectively I have done 8 hours worth of work and I still have 24 hours remaining. When I see my resource load based on remaining effort it simply shows 12 and 12 on 1st and 2nd. I fail to understand this.

What I am saying that on 1st I did 8 hours of work (and logged time against it), then I update my manager that actually remaining work is 24h, so shouldn't that 24h now be somehow accommodated in the remaining days of the task?

Sameer,

Best Practice is actually to update the Work from 16h to 36h. This will update accordingly (if you expect 8h per day). Since you said the remaining effort is more, the system now needs to calculate how it will get the remaining effort within the allowed time frame (based on work/duration). Another way to look at this is reviewing the Work Policy, which would affect this. Since you set the Work and Duration the third one is UNIT (Resource Unit % allocated for task). You were 100% with 8h per day but when you changed to 24hr remaining, the Unit was changed to 12h per day so that the Due Date would still be met.

If you never want the Unit% on R1 to change, then you set it manually or change the Work Policy to Fixed Unit. Here is a video tutorial that talks more about Work Policy..

Let me reiterate my question:

Task is 2 days long, starts on 1st and ends on 2nd. Work = 16h, Resource is 100% allocated. So resource load on planned shows up as 8 and 8 for the 2 days. So far so good. Now end of day 1, Resource gets in an 8-hour time entry, which is approved on 1st itself by the manager. Now My actual effort is 8 hours and automatically remaining is 8. Now as a manager if I change remaining effort from 8 to 10, indicating that 10 more hours are needed to get this done, shouldnt the resource load in remaining effort view show 8 and 10? instead of 5 & 5? Day 1 has already passed.

Sameer,

I am not seeing this behavior. In fact, I do not see Resource Load update if Remaining Effort is changed, only if Work is changed but there could be a setting in your environment I am missing. BUT, in the testing I did... when changing work to add the 2 hours of work, the Load showed 9 and 9 instead of 8 and 10. There may be more to your specific setup/environment that I am missing.

In order to properly troubleshoot this with you and provide you a proper solution, please open a ticket and either I or one of our other qualified Support Engineers will work with you.
