Change in Due Date Changes Start Date

When I change the due date of an item and leave the work the same, the start date changes to match the minimum time needed to cover the work. How can I disable the system from changing the start date when the due date changes?

Gareth,

This occurs likely because the Work Policy on the Task is set to Fixed Work. You would want this set to Fixed Duration so that the Work adjusts, not duration...thus the dates do not change.

Notes:

1 - You can set a new work item default in the system settings (Work Plan Settings - 13.1).

2 - To see what the current Work Policy is on the task (or Project) or to change it, you can add the Work Policy column to your Work Plan or search for Work Policy in the search field within the Work Item Property card.

Sincerely,

Boris

Thanks for the response. If I have a start date set by completion of a predecessor and I have 8 hours of work that I want a resource to complete sometime during a week, I would think that setting the due date to the end of the week would leave the start date in place and not adjust the actual work required to accomplish the task. It seems counter intuitive to have a start date move up to a new end date to pack the work into the shortest possible time.

Is there a way to have the start date not update, work not update, and only duration update when changing the due date?

Bill,

Use Fixed Work, work policy instead of Fixed Duration. BUT, a Fixed Work Task with 8h of work will be only one day (duration automatically set). If you want to change the due date so that it is a week long, then the duration will automatically adjust to 5d or 1w but the work will remain since you are using Fixed Work.

Hope this clarifies t he issue based on your needs.

Sincerely,

Boris

Thanks for the reply. That's how I have it set up. But when I change the due date it does not increase duration it moves the start date up and keeps duration the same and work the same.

Bill,

Interesting, I wonder if there is another manual override that is causing this. We would be happy to look into this. Please open a case and include description, Project/Task Name and ID as well as screen captures and access.

Sincerely,

Boris
