How do I create a custom field to establish an auto updating numeric outline value?

Hi!

I need to a way to organize a project in the following format:

Project

1.0  = Milestone 1

2.0 = Milestone 2

2.1 = Milestone 2 - Task 1

2.2 = Milestone 2 - Task 2

2.3.1 = Milestone 2 - Task 3 - Subtask 1

etc

And to automatically update the list if a new milestone/task is inserted.

I'm brand new to Clarizen and do not have experience writing business rules or any kind of programming...yet :)

Thank you for your help & hope you are having a good day!

Rebecca,

We do not really have anything like this out of the box. We do however have something similar that does numbering of Projects which automatically assigns project numbers to newly opened projects. I guess the same concepts can be applied to Milestones and Tasks within a Project. Here is the URL for the App...

Also, you can consider creating a Template and reuse the template accordingly. The outline numbering is not really something that is done in the Project Management arena as these are handled within hierarchy. If you provide me your Use Case of what you are trying to accomplish, maybe I can come up with a plan or business rule to do this.

I will repost this to the Customization section of the forum for proper exposure, but for further clarification, we suggest you register for one of our Office Hours - Advanced Configuration Webinars (see the link-> http://www.clarizen.com/resources/online-demo.html#second ).These are great resources for free consulting with our Customer Success Managers that can provide visual examples and answers to your questions.

Hi Rebecca,

Our current business rules architecture does not support this use case for the entire workplan.

We already have an open Change Request and I will add you to it.

Tamir

Rebbeca,

This is the internal ID: CR-1459 for you to followup.

I apologize we can't offer any solution now.

I'd like to up-vote this request.

I appreciate the dynamic nature (and sort/filter-ability) of Work Plans; and, the outline numbering as described by Rebecca is potentially relative to Project-Subproject structure. But understanding a structured hierarchy is effectively enforced by the product.

Moreover, I've noticed an indent reference is included on Work Plan exports to Excel, but I've been unable to easily report on this figure from within the GUI.

I might be naive to think that this request is predominately a hybrid of the Sequence ID and the Indent Level.

I'd also like to see this feature. As Matt described, when exporting the work plan to Excel, the indent level shows the hierarchical relationship so surely that could be leveraged off to create an outline numbered list?  Would make it much easier to manipulate WBS and also to see easily where the predecessors and successors are to a task without having to trace the arrows on the gantt chart.
