Create Reoccuring task

I'm having a problem creating a reoccurring task within a project.  Every time I select add "reoccurring task" the box opens and I type in the name of the task.  This is the only information it allows me to add.  When I save the task I get an error - Validation error edit item for details.  Can I take an existing task and make it a reoccurring one rather than having to retype all the information.
