You can filter for only the lowest level of tasks by putting a filter such as # of subitems = 0. You can also create filters that return tasks with a specific parent or grandparent (Project = X OR Parent.Project = X). If you have a really deep hierarchy, one other option is to work with your PS consultant to create a custom field that captures the master project and then filter based on that custom field.
